Origami how to: Make a street lamp with just one Post-it® Note

Use Post-it® Notes to create an origami street lamp with this fun idea from Jenny W. Chan.

  • Step-by-step directions

  • What you’ll need:

    1 –
    1 pair of scissors

  • Two halves are better than one

    1. Fold the Post-it® Super Sticky Note in half with the adhesive side facing out. Unfold. Cut along the crease to create two halves.
  • Start making the lamp base with the first half

    1. Take one of the Post-it® Super Sticky Note halves and hold it so that the adhesive is at the bottom and facing you. Fold the top of the note towards you and down about 1 centimeter and make a crease. It doesn’t have to be an exact measurement. The crease you just made is now the new top of the unit. Push the top back, away from you and fold down about ½ centimeter, making a second crease. Now when you look at the unit from the side, it should have a zigzag shape.

    2. Flip the unit over so the adhesive is on the right and facing you. Then fold the bottom of the note up about a ½ centimeter. As you do this, a triangle shape will start to form on the left. Flatten that shape with your left hand so it forms a triangle. Do the same thing with the top. Fold the top of the note down about a ½ centimeter and flatten it, forming a triangle on the left side.
  • Another zigzag fold and more triangle shapes

    1. Now turn the design around so the triangles are facing away from you and the base of the lamp is at the bottom. Next you’ll create another zigzag fold by folding the stem of the lamp down and away from you. Form the crease about ½ centimeter from the base of the lamp. Then fold the stem back up the same amount, about ½ centimeter.

    2. Now flip the unit over again so the adhesive is on the right side and facing you. Repeat step 3 above by folding the bottom of the note up again about a ½ centimeter and flattening out the triangle shape that starts to form on the left side. Then do it again on the top.

    3. Now you’ll be able to see the bottom of the lamp taking shape! Soften out the edges of the lamp base, by folding each of the four corners of the back just a little.
  • Start making the lamp top with the second half

    1. Take the second half of the Post-it® Super Sticky Note. With the adhesive at the top and facing away from you, make a fold about 4-1/2 cm from the bottom (doesn’t have to be exact), folding the top back and down. Then make a zigzag fold again by folding the back sheet up and making a crease when the space between the top of the sheet and the first crease is about 1 cm.

    2. Now flip the unit over and with the adhesive on the right side and facing you, repeat the same thing you did in step 3. Fold the bottom of the note up and as you’re doing that, flatten out the triangle shape that starts to form on the left side. Do the same thing at the top. And don’t worry if the top and bottom flaps overlap.
  • Connect the lamp base and top

    1. Open the top and bottom flaps. You’ll be using the adhesive behind the flaps to connect the base to the top of the lamp. Take the first half and place the stem part of the lamp in the center of the adhesive, press it down and then close the flaps back up.
  • Finish making the lamp top

    1. Flip the lamp over to its front side, and now you can see there is a square at the top. Fold the left bottom corner of the square under at a slant. Then do the same thing with the right bottom corner. Try to fold the sides so they are congruent, but keep in mind it doesn’t have to be exact.

    2. Fold the top left corner down at a slant, and then do the same thing with the top right corner.

    3. The very top of the lamp should now be flat. Fold the top down a little less than 1 centimeter. Then create another little zigzag fold by folding it back up so it sticks out slightly from the top. Now the lamp is done!
